You’ll also gain experience with different propagation methods\, including cuttings and divisions. \nPlease Note: Portions of this workshop will take place outdoors in full sun. SUMMARY:Installation and Establishment of California Native or Waterwise Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to properly install your new landscape and get your garden off to a healthy start!\n\n\n\nChoosing great plants and a great design are important\, but that is only part of what you need to succeed with a landscape renovation.\n \n\nEqually important is preparing your site\, installing everything properly\, and caring for your plants correctly during the critical “establishment” period. Join us for this workshop and learn how to set yourself up for success!\n \n\nIn this workshop we will cover: \n\nThe steps to install a new landscape\, and the order in which to take them on\nPreparing your site\nBasics of construction for simple paths and patios\nIrrigation installation\, as it relates to project installation (for more details on irrigation systems\, attend our other irrigation-focused workshops)\nBasics of “grading” (digging and moving soil) to capture water in features like dry stream beds (for more details\, attend our “Rainwater Harvesting for Home Landscapes” workshop)\nPlant layout and installation\nCleanup\, mulching\, and final installation details\nGarden “establishment”: how to care for and water plantings in their critical first years to transition them into their new homes and set them up to thrive.\n\n\nEach participant will be able to select a native wildflower seed packet of their choice to take home.\n \n\nAfter the workshop concludes\, for those who wish to stay\, we will be offering a raffle give-away of some of our favorite waterwise California native plants. We will also tell you a bit about each one\, why it is one of our favorites\, and the garden situations in which it is likely thrive.\n \n\nAfter the workshop we will have a variety of our favorite native or waterwise plants for sale at our Waterwise Community Nursery\, perfect for fall planting.\n \n\nOur instructor for this workshop will be Scott Kleinrock\, Conservation Programs Manager here at Chino Basin Water Conservation District and the Waterwise Community Center. \nScott has been working in horticulture for almost 20 years\, focused on both the design and ongoing care of sustainable native or edible landscapes in Southern California at the residential and public garden scales. He has a master’s degree in landscape architecture for Cal Poly Pomona and was previously the Landscape Design and Planning Coordinator at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. \nIn this workshop we will demonstrate our favorite approaches to setting up and maintaining cost-conscious DIY waterwise water features and habitat-providing bird baths for home landscapes. He has a master’s degree in landscape architecture for Cal Poly Pomona and was previously the Landscape Design and Planning Coordinator at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. \nProper watering of fruit trees and edible plants is often little understood but extremely important to optimize your yields\, maximize flavor\, and protect your financial investment in plants\, seeds\, and supplies. \nParticipants will learn: \n-How to build two approaches to irrigating fruit trees: High-efficiency sprays and in-line drip irrigation. \n-How to build drip irrigation systems for vegetable beds\, including raised and in-ground beds. \n-How often and how long to run these systems at different times of the year for maximum plant health without wasting any extra water. \n-We will also provide parts lists and sources for each type of irrigation system we discuss. \nThis class will be held partially outdoors\, so please check the weather and dress appropriately. DESCRIPTION:Drip irrigation is a great way to help make your landscape water efficient\, but where do you start?\n\n\nDrip irrigation is a great way to help make your landscape water efficient\, but where do you start? \nThis workshop will provide the principles and know-how to help you succeed with drip irrigation. \nThis workshop will cover: \n-Overview of the components that make up a quality drip irrigation system \n-Designing a new drip system or retrofitting an existing a sprinkler system to drip irrigation \n-Basic maintenance and repair of drip systems \n-Setting an irrigation schedule for drip irrigation system (how often and how long to water) \n-Demonstration garden irrigation tour \nThis workshop will be held partially outdoors\, so please check the weather and dress appropriately. DESCRIPTION:Join us in our beautiful Demonstration Garden for a hands-on workshop on seed harvesting and growing waterwise plants from seed.\n\n\nJoin us in our beautiful Demonstration Garden for a hands-on workshop on seed harvesting and growing waterwise plants from seed. Learn how to properly collect\, store\, and grow some of our favorite easy-to-grow native and waterwise plants to support your garden and local ecosystems—without breaking the bank and with minimal supplies. \nIn this class\, we will cover: \n• Identifying mature seeds ready for collection \n• Proper techniques for collecting and cleaning seeds \n• Best practices for storing seeds for future planting \n• How to propagate different types of native plant seeds \n• Hands-on milkweed seed planting to take home \nEach participant will collect seeds from spent spring wildflower blooms in our demonstration garden and take them home for future planting. Additionally\, all participants will pot native milkweed seeds in starter packs to take home\, helping to support monarch butterflies. \nImportant: Portions of this workshop will take place outdoors in the sun. Please dress accordingly\, including wearing a hat and sun protection. \nAfter the workshop\, for those who wish to stay\, we will be offering a raffle giveaway of some of our favorite waterwise and California native plants\, along with insights on where they thrive best in the garden. \nHarvesting and propagating seeds is an essential skill for any gardener looking to grow native plants and support local pollinators. Understanding when and how to collect seeds\, how to store them properly\, and how to start new plants from seed can ensure long-term success in your landscape. \nOur instructors for this workshop are Ashley Alfaro and Kaylee Denberger\, both graduates of Cal Poly Pomona with bachelor’s degrees in plant sciences. Ashley and Kaylee work at Chino Basin Water Conservation District\, where they specialize in working hands-on with California native plants and creating educational content for the community through social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube.

Keeping your garden healthy and looking great is not complicated\, but relies on knowing what to do and when! \nWe will cover: \n⁃ Spring season pruning and shaping of plants (for the ones that are tended to in spring) \n⁃ Seasonal mulch and compost application: what to do and what to avoid \n⁃ Common spring season weeds and tips and tricks for dealing with them \n⁃ Watering / Irrigation for waterwise and native plants: how much and how often \n⁃ Special tips for “establishment” care in the first year of a newly planted plant or garden. \n⁃ Mid-spring planting: which waterwise plants are still happy to be planted in April and which might be better to wait to plant until fall. \n⁃ Proper planting for waterwise and California native plants with a planting demonstration \n⁃ Plenty of time to answer your spring garden care questions! \nOur instructor for this workshop will be George Jimenez\, Horticulture Lead and Conservation Technician here at Chino Basin Water Conservation District and the Waterwise Community Center. \nGeorge has been active in diverse roles in the horticulture industry over the last 20 years\, leading everything from high-end golf course landscape management to native landscape construction and specialized care of California native and waterwise gardens. We will be working with a design firm to learn about innovative play and ways to make this design inclusive for the little ones in our neighborhood and beyond. \nCome find out more about this special project and share your input.
