SUMMARY:DIY Water Features and Birdbaths
DESCRIPTION:Adding a consistent source of clean water to any yard will draw songbirds and provide them with a hard-to-find and essential resource.\n\n\nOur instructor for this workshop will be Scott Kleinrock\, Conservation Programs Manager here at Chino Basin Water Conservation District and the Waterwise Community Center.\n \nScott has been working in horticulture for almost 20 years\, focused on both the design and ongoing care of sustainable native or edible landscapes in Southern California at the residential and public garden scales. He has a master’s degree in landscape architecture for Cal Poly Pomona and was previously the Landscape Design and Planning Coordinator at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. \nIn this workshop we will demonstrate our favorite approaches to setting up and maintaining cost-conscious DIY waterwise water features and habitat-providing bird baths for home landscapes. It truly is “if you build it\, they will come.” \nIf you choose to create a recirculating water feature\, the sound of that water will also help mask the background urban noise in your outdoor space while providing a sense of psychological cooling in a low-water garden! \nWe will also show you how to keep each feature clean and how to ensure they do not become habitat for mosquitoes. \nParticipants will see how we make and maintain: \n\nBubbling rock water features\nFountain-in-a-pot water features\nWater trough aquatic garden water features\nCeramic dish bird baths\n\nEach participant will be able to select a native wildflower seed packet of their choice to take home. \nAfter the workshop concludes\, for those who wish to stay\, we will be offering a raffle give-away of some of our favorite waterwise California native plants. We will also tell you a bit about each one\, why it is one of our favorites\, and the garden situations in which it is likely thrive.

SUMMARY:Spring Waterwise and California Native Garden Care
DESCRIPTION:Learn the most important spring activities to care for you waterwise or California native garden and keep it looking its best!\n\n\nJoin us in the Waterwise Community Center’s beautiful public garden for a discussion and demonstration of the most important spring seasonal activities to care for your waterwise or California native garden. Keeping your garden healthy and looking great is not complicated\, but relies on knowing what to do and when! \nWe will cover: \n⁃ Spring season pruning and shaping of plants (for the ones that are tended to in spring) \n⁃ Seasonal mulch and compost application: what to do and what to avoid \n⁃ Common spring season weeds and tips and tricks for dealing with them \n⁃ Watering / Irrigation for waterwise and native plants: how much and how often \n⁃ Special tips for “establishment” care in the first year of a newly planted plant or garden. \n⁃ Mid-spring planting: which waterwise plants are still happy to be planted in April and which might be better to wait to plant until fall. \n⁃ Proper planting for waterwise and California native plants with a planting demonstration \n⁃ Plenty of time to answer your spring garden care questions! \nOur instructor for this workshop will be George Jimenez\, Horticulture Lead and Conservation Technician here at Chino Basin Water Conservation District and the Waterwise Community Center. \nGeorge has been active in diverse roles in the horticulture industry over the last 20 years\, leading everything from high-end golf course landscape management to native landscape construction and specialized care of California native and waterwise gardens. He holds multiple industry certificates through Mt. San Antonio College and leads the hands-on garden volunteer program at CBWCD. \nEach participant will be able to select a native wildflower seed packet of their choice to take home. \nAfter the workshop concludes\, for those who wish to stay\, we will be offering a raffle give-away of some of our favorite waterwise California native plants. We will also tell you a bit about each one\, why it is one of our favorites\, and the garden situations in which it is likely thrive.

SUMMARY:Favorite Native and Waterwise Plants for So Cal - Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn about our top choices\, what we love about each one\, and how to choose what to plant where.\n\n\nOur instructor for this workshop will be Scott Kleinrock\, Conservation Programs Manager here at Chino Basin Water Conservation District and the Waterwise Community Center. \nScott has been working in horticulture for almost 20 years\, focused on both the design and ongoing care of sustainable native or edible landscapes in Southern California at the residential and public garden scales. He has a master’s degree in landscape architecture for Cal Poly Pomona and was previously the Landscape Design and Planning Coordinator at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. \nWondering what to plant? We will explore our top recommended plants for gardens and landscapes in southern California. These plants have it all! Beauty\, color\, habitat for birds or pollinators\, and only need to be watered once or twice a month\, even in the Summer! \nThese plants we will focus on will generally thrive in both inland and coastal SoCal landscapes. Some of them will grow well in the desert. Many will not tolerate the hard frosts of our local mountain elevations. \nThis class will be structured on providing great plant options for the different parts of a landscape people often need to fill. We will provide lists\, detailed discussion\, and tips about favorite plants for: \n-Providing shade \n-Full blasting sun\, including super-hot areas\, like along driveways and against walls \n-Along walkways or paths \n-Parking strips or parkways \n-North sides of buildings that are shady most of the year\, but then are in full sun mid-summer \n-Shade\, including under existing large trees \n-“Transition zones” between lawns and low-water planted areas \n-In and near dry stream beds and other water infiltration features \n-Under and around fruit trees \n-And more! \nThis class will focus on the plants themselves\, and not design. If you can\, we highly encourage you to also participate in one or more of our design-focused classes to best be able to plan how to use your new favorite plants together for a beautiful waterwise garden.
