SUMMARY:Favorite California Native and Waterwise Plants for Southern California
DESCRIPTION:Learn about our top choices\, what we love about each one\, and how to choose what to plant where.\n\n\nWondering what to plant? We will explore our top recommended plants for gardens and landscapes in southern California. These plants have it all! Beauty\, color\, habitat for birds or pollinators\, and only need to be watered once or twice a month\, even in the Summer! \nThese plants we will focus on will generally thrive in both inland and coastal SoCal landscapes. Some of them will grow well in the desert. Many will not tolerate the hard frosts of our local mountain elevations. \nThis class will be structured on providing great plant options for the different parts of a landscape people often need to fill. We will provide lists\, detailed discussion\, and tips about favorite plants for: \n-Providing shade \n-Full blasting sun\, including super-hot areas\, like along driveways and against walls \n-Along walkways or paths \n-Parking strips or parkways \n-North sides of buildings that are shady most of the year\, but then are in full sun mid-summer \n-Shade\, including under existing large trees \n-“Transition zones” between lawns and low-water planted areas \n-In and near dry stream beds and other water infiltration features \n-Under and around fruit trees \n-And more! \nThis class will focus on the plants themselves\, and not design. If you can\, we highly encourage you to also participate in one or more of our design-focused classes to best be able to plan how to use your new favorite plants together for a beautiful waterwise garden.

SUMMARY:Renovating Lawn Sprinklers for Waterwise and California Native Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The know-how to retrofit your lawn sprinklers to irrigate your waterwise garden.\n\n\nIf you are removing a lawn and installing a waterwise garden\, you will need to alter your irrigation system. If you don’t\, those 4 inch tall lawn pop-up sprinklers or rotors will usually end up spraying directly into the side of the closest plant\, resulting in some very wet areas and many very dry areas. \nThe good news is that if your buried irrigation pipes are in decent condition\, you can usually save most of that system\, and retrofit it by either installing new taller sprinklers on the same main pipe\, or by capping off most of the sprinklers and using the buried pipe to distribute water to a new drip irrigation system built on the soil surface. \nLearn how to do it by attending this workshop! \nIn this workshop we will cover: \n• How to assess your current irrigation system and decide whether to retrofit it or install a completely new system \n• How to choose between spray and drip irrigation based on your specific site and the plants you will be planting \n• Changes to your valves\, if necessary \n• Deciding to change your timer (and timer replacement rebates and programs) \n• Basics of designing spray and drip irrigation systems \n• How to retrofit your lawn sprinkler system into a spray or drip system that will correctly irrigate and evenly distribute water to a waterwise landscape \n• Figuring out how often and how long to water
